Jehaad- for Zero Thalassemia-Islamabad

"Thalassemia is a rare inherited blood disorder characterized from moderate to severe anaemia."

Have you ever wondered the existence of species that have no mode of survival but human blood? The first ting that comes to might be your favourite fictional characters but what if someone real exists in this world with the very same mode of nutrition? Now you might think I'm mad but the reality is that there is a disease in which a person can only survive with the supply of human blood which is known as Thalassemia.

Thalassemia is a rare inherited blood disorder characterized from moderate to severe anaemia. In this disease the bone marrow fails to form enough blood cells to transport haemoglobin ,thus leads to the shortage of blood in the body. Genetically Thalassemia is divided into two types:
  • Alpha-thalassemia
  • Beta-thalassemia
In alpha Thalassemia genes from chromosome 16 are deleted which result in production of non-alpha globin proteins. In beta-thalassemia defective production is caused due to mutations which lead to either no beta or reduced beta chains production. These two types are further divided in to two types:

  • Thalassemia minors
  • Thalassemia majors (severe anaemic)
If a Thalassemia minor marries a Thalassemia minor then there are 25% chances of birth of a Thalassemia major child, 50% chances of birth of a Thalassemia minor child and 25% chances of birth of a normal child.

In Pakistan, 6000 children are born with Thalassemia every year. (APP. 8th May, 2013. Express tribune). The prime reason is not the ratio of 1st cousin marriage but unawareness among people about this deadly disease. The problem with this disease is that this disease, being a genetic mutation, cannot be cured throughout the life. The patient has to suffer the pain again and again.

To spread awareness among people, different organizations have started to work here one of them is " Jehaad for zero- Thalassemia. It is anon- profit organization which is student owned, student initiated and student run organization. It came in to being in 2010 and it has spread to 50 districts.

Anyone can join Jzt and can be a part of change .

The thing which should be kept in mind is that there is no harm in donating blood. Men can donate blood four times a year and women thrice. All that matters is their haemoglobin level. People have  many conceptions regarding this practice which need to be eliminated as there are only 3% people who donate blood. Here there is a short video featuring the need of blood for the needy. It emphasizes on why people should donate blood
